The Secretary-General of D-8, H.E. Ambassador Dato’ Ku Jaafar Ku Shaari attended the opening ceremony of the 46th Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates from 1-2 March, 2019.
The theme of the meeting was ‘’Fifty Years of Islamic Cooperation: A Roadmap for Prosperity and Development’’. The Session started with the inauguration speech delivered by the Foreign Minister of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, H.E. Dr. A.K. Abdul Momen, as the Chair of the 45th Session of the Council and he stated that humanity is above all and nations should look forward to seeing peace and stability across national frontiers. After his statement, he handed over the chairmanship to the Foreign Minister of the United Arab Emirates, H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
In his statement, the Foreign Minister of UAE thanked Bangladesh for its efforts during its chairmanship of the CFM. He also pointed out that Islam is a religion of peace that discourages violence, hatred and injustices in all forms and we need to take necessary measures to end extremism in all forms. He also expressed the crucial importance of cooperation between OIC countries and in all Muslim regions. Furthermore, the Secretary-General of OIC, H.E. Dr. Yousef bin Ahmad Al-Othaimeen delivered speech and said that Muslims are facing a lot of challenges including conflicts, terrorism and poverty and this needs our combined efforts to find solutions to these problems. The Foreign Minister of the Republic of India, H.E. Sushma Swaraj also delivered a statement as a guest of honour at the meeting. The conference has continued with statements of regional groups. In this regard, the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Gabon representing the African group, Foreign Minister of Kingdom of Saudi Arabia representing the Arab group and Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan representing the Asian group delivered statements regarding the need to nip extremism and terrorism in the bud and promote prosperity, peace and unity among the Muslims of the world.
After the opening session, the first day of the conference continued with the statements of the member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and bilateral meetings among member countries of the OIC.
On the second day, the conference continued with the statements of the member countries, adoption of draft resolutions, Abu Dhabi Declaration and joint press conference by the Chair of the CFM and the Secretary-General of OIC.
