The overall objective of cooperation in Pharmaceuticals and Medical Equipment in relation to industry is to articulate a vision, targets and road map(s) for addressing key development challenges facing the industry. A comprehensive road map would be put in place for developing policies, legal instruments, technologies, manpower, infrastructure and market to ensure that the visions and targets are realized. The long term objective would be stimulating economic growth and employment.

The 5th D-8 Ministerial Meeting on Industry held on 11 May, 2016 in Cairo, agreed to establish
the Task Force (TF) on Pharmaceuticals and Medical Equipment and tasked the D-8 Secretariat to
draft the ToR of Task Force on Pharmaceuticals and Medical Equipment.

Outcomes of the Task Force on Pharmaceuticals and Medical Equipment of the 6th Ministerial Meeting on Industrial Cooperation held on 14- 16 November 2017 in Abuja, Nigeria are as follows:

The Meeting deliberated on how to foster cooperation in scientific, technical and engineering in the field of pharmaceuticals and medical equipment industry.
• The Meeting adopted strategies for dealing with the challenges of a rapidly evolving globalized pharmaceutical industry.

Terms of Reference (ToR) for the Task Force on Pharmaceuticals and Medical Equipment
identified some areas of collaborations among D8 member countries as follows;
• Bio-Tech pharmaceuticals
• Natural (Herbal) pharmaceuticals
• Medical devices/equipment
• Active Pharmaceuticals Ingredients (APIs) and other raw materials
• Strengthening the Research and development in Pharmaceuticals and Medical Equipment
sectors
• Access to market
• Development of the Secretariat of the D-8 Pharmaceuticals and Medical Equipment Association (Focal point of the Association).
• The secretariat should be domicile in the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade and Investment (IDD), Nigeria.
• Experiences about PPP in hospitals projects will be shared among D-8 countries
• Pharma and medical device companies of Turkey or other member states will be informed about Nigerian investment environment and opportunities
• Establishment of Generics, Bio and Herbal pharmaceutical industries among member states
