SG attends conference on ‘International Development Cooperation: trends and emerging opportunities’

Secretary General Dr. Seyed Ali Mohammad Mousavi attended the international conference on ‘Trends and Emerging Opportunities – perspectives of the new actors’ jointly organized by Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Istanbul, Turkey.The conference started with the opening speeches by H.E. Emrullah ??ler, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State of the Republic of Turkey and Hon Helen Clark, the UNDP Administrator.
 
The conference aimed at focusing on the global debate on future of development cooperation and its main theme was the changing trend in development cooperation as well as emergence of new actors & their perspectives in the development cooperation paradigm. The conference also focused on the need for effective development partnership as well as intensification of cooperative efforts. The discussion focused on growth with effective partnership rather than growth as an outcome of aid effectiveness.  
Secretary-General Mousavi took part in the Ministerial panel moderated by Hon Ms. Helen Clark, the UNDP Administrator and attended by current and former Ministers, Head of development agencies and head of Foreign Ministry from Jamaica, South Korea, Norway, Russia and Haiti respectively. Mousavi gave a background of D-8 and highlighted the role and engagement of the Organization as a prominent inter-governmental entity for economic development as envisaged by its leaders. He said that D-8 provided a good platform for promoting South-South Cooperation. He mentioned that D-8 had marked significant progress over the period of 16 years since its establishment in the areas such as industry, trade, transportation etc. and thus had contributed to the economic uplift of the people of the region. He also pointed to the fact that States are increasingly moving toward regional cooperation because of the commonalities they share and of effectiveness in cooperation. 
The conference attracted Ministers, Heads of development cooperation agencies, senior government officials and civil society and development actors, a mix of high-level participants from different coterie of global development cooperation regime. It provided an excellent forum for the policy-makers and practitioners to share their views and experiences on the current global process of development cooperation.
